Platforms - Odoo Manufacturing
Production data captured where the work happens.
Odoo Manufacturing gives Australian makers BOMs, routings, work orders, subcontracting and true production costing in the same system as finance and inventory. We sequence it deliberately - BOM and stock accuracy first, floor capture second, costing and scheduling once the data can be trusted.
At a glance
- Who this suits
- Make-to-order, make-to-stock and assembly operations with repeatable product families.
- First milestone
- Accurate BOMs and inventory - everything else depends on them.
- Outcome
- Production cost, capacity and traceability visible during the job, not after invoicing.
Capability
What we implement in Odoo MRP.
Bills of materials that reflect the build
Multi-level BOMs with variants, phantom assemblies, by-products and scrap allowances matching what is actually consumed on the floor.
Routings and work centres
Operations, work centre capacity, setup and run times, so scheduling reflects real constraints rather than optimistic assumptions.
Work orders and shop-floor capture
Tablet or barcode capture of start, finish, quantity produced and scrap - recorded as it happens rather than reconstructed later.
Material planning
Replenishment rules, lead times and manufacturing orders driven from demand, so shortages are visible before the job is scheduled.
Subcontracting
External operations tracked with material issued, expected return and cost captured against the production order.
Quality and traceability
Quality checkpoints in the routing, plus lot and serial traceability from raw material through to the customer delivery.
Sequence
The order that makes manufacturing stick.
01
Get the BOMs right
Accurate, maintained bills of materials are the precondition. Without them, nothing downstream can be trusted.
02
Stabilise inventory
Accurate on-hand quantities and locations before production consumes from them.
03
Model routings
Work centres, operations and realistic times, starting simple and adding detail once capture is habitual.
04
Introduce floor capture
Work order confirmation at the point of work, with an interface an operator can use in gloves.
05
Turn on costing
Real material, labour and overhead against production orders once the capture data is reliable.
06
Plan and schedule
Only once capacity and time data reflect reality is scheduling worth acting on.
Readiness
An honest readiness check.
Ready for MRP
Preconditions met
- Products and BOMs documented and owned
- Stock counts broadly accurate
- A defined production process per product family
- Floor supervision willing to capture at source
- Someone accountable for master data upkeep
Not ready yet
Fix these first
- BOMs living in people's heads
- Stock accuracy unknown or poor
- Every job effectively bespoke and undocumented
- No devices or connectivity on the floor
- Production planning done entirely in spreadsheets nobody will surrender
Straight talk
Three things manufacturers should hear first.
01MRP is a data discipline, not a module
The software is capable. The result depends entirely on whether BOMs, routings and stock are maintained by someone whose job it is.
02Start simpler than you think
One-step manufacturing with basic routings, adopted properly, beats a detailed model that the floor stops updating within a month.
03Costing accuracy follows capture accuracy
Production costing only becomes meaningful once operators confirm work reliably. Expect a period of parallel checking before you rely on the numbers.
